eliminate any food source. check under your sink for any holes. if its an odd shape steel wool will work. they have hav- a-hart traps which catch them so u can take them down the street to the woods somewhere instead of killing them. u set one when u go to bed & check immediately the next morning. make sure theyre closed when not in use.
usually strong scents such as cayenne pepper, moth balls, or peppermint extract will work because they hate the smell. a new product called fresh cab works too and it's all-natural and smells good to humans. see links below.
if u look where a past person asked the same question & i answered-- the scents are working for him.
glue traps are terribly inhumane.

Peppermint oil is a natural deterrent. The smell is simply too intense for rodents and they will not try to go near it. It also helps to mask the scent of any tasty morsels that have been missed when cleaning. You can get peppermint oil in most health food stores and even some major grocery stores. Place a drop or two on a cotton ball. Place the cotton balls in areas where mice are likely to enter your house, by doorways or heat vents, etc.
Mice have a natural aversion to mint, and will generally avoid it. Plant it around the exterior of your house as a deterrent as well as potting some around your home. Not only will they keep mice away, but they’ll freshen the air as well.
Just don't let your dog eat the cotton balls :)

I've had great success with this trap in my house:
http://veganstore.com/index.html?stocknumber=266
I've caught over ten mice with it so far and it can be used over and over indefinitely. Or, you can try making the free homemade humane trap described here:
http://www.helpinganimals.com/wildlife_livingWithMice.asp
It can catch more than one mouse at a time. If you do live trap mice, please be sure to check the traps several times a day and release the mice promptly, approximately a mile away from your home. It is much more cruel to allow a mouse in a live trap to slowly starve to death than to kill it quickly with a snap trap. When you release the mice, do it in an area with some sheltering bushes or plants.
The absolute cruelest traps are glue traps. Mice have been known to gnaw off their own limbs and tear off their skin in an effort to escape, as they starve or dehydrate to death or suffocate in the glue. It can take three to five days for them to die. Poison isn't any better, as the mice die slowly and painfully from internal bleeding. It can take up to a week for them to die, and then they smell as they rot behind your walls.
It doesn't take much extra effort to be kind. You will feel better and so will the mice! Good luck!

buy a live mouse trap. this will catch the mice live and then you can just drop them off some where out in the woods if possible. i wouldn't buy a cat, bc i have some family members who have cats and they did nothing to the mice.

Unfortunately they breed almost as fast as cockroaches.
The best I found was the granular feed , same that they use on rats , available at hardware stores.
OR get a cat , mine whacks them reliably (and is an outdoor cat so that is her recreation - never clip the claws , they are more effective with them)
ps: mice & cockroaches love clean places , they thank you .

go to your local hardware store ,there is a device that plugs into the wall that sends off a frequency noise that acts on thier nervous system that drives them out . this doesn't affect humans or non rodent type pets,we have a dog.we have a few through our home and don't have any trouble at all.
