First, don't listen to people who don't know what they talk about - like Sam.
Now to your question. I'm a black South African. Highly patriotic, therefore, negatives wouldn't because I'm anti-establishment.
Note: May - July are cold months here.
Granted KwaZulu Natal (KZN) is beautiful and you'll have the advantage of some beautiful beaches. But it lacks authentic or near authentic wild life. The other thing is that you'll have to go deeper inland from the beaches to go to the nature reserves with wild animals.
Cape Town (CT) is stunning. You'd see table mountain and Robben Island. You'd also see wine estates in and around the city. It's a large city but laid back. The beaches are beautiful. But you won't have easy access to the animals. You shall have to tarvell deeper inland to see that.
Port Elizabeth (PE) is a large city with beautiful beaches. It is a relatively short distance drive to one of the biggest and successful nature reserves, Shamwari (hope they'll pay me for marketing them). While PE cannot boast the beautify that is in KZN and CT, it has an added advantage of you also see the beautiful natural forest and rivers in the Tsitsikama National Park. You can also enjoy driving in the garden route area, which is just over two hours from PE.
Crime: Yes, it is a concern, but that is true with every part of the world.
You should also get a reputable tour guide. You can ask from any of the hotels you would be staying at. But get that before you leave your country.
I'm convinced that you would enjoy the beauty of the country, the hospitality of her people, and a relative inexpensive holiday.

I am South African but I sadly live in the UK now. If you want to be near a beach and see wild life the you should go Kwazulu-Natal. It is on the east side of the country where the Indian Ocean run which is a warm ocean. There is also a wildlife park there, but I cant remember the name. Few words of advise, try not to use public transport for long distance travel i.e. trains, try to keep out of the big cities at night. Don't flash your jewelry or money around. Keep your handbag tight. Enjoy the sunshine and the friendliness of the people. I promise once you go there you would never want to go back home.

Sam 'a good chance of being raped'. I agree it's not the safest place in the world, but to say that is complete madness.
I am planning a trip there sometime soon and I know quite a lot of South Africans who I've asked for advice. To be fair, they are all white South Africans and they are quite bias. They all advise care but it's not some kind of hell on earth that it's painted to be.
What about Cape Town? I'm planning Cape Town and then a train to Jo'berg. Cape Town has a beach and from what I've heard some amazing scenery. Not sure if it's close to a national park or reserve though, sorry.
Lol at Sam: I can't believe you are citing WorldNetDaily, an American conservative Republican website as evidence. I don't want this to degenerate into an argument, but surely you can see that this article may be just a tad bias??

KwaZulu-Natal has many beaches. Numerous game parks are within close proximity. (Slightly different from zoos, animals roam free over large areas).
