At first you have feeder bands, rain, wind, calm windy rain calm rainy wind. Before long the calm goes away and you just have wind rain and gust. My emotions were kind of like cool no work. Things with large surface area or tall will go first, street signs, telephone poles(power), mighty oaks, palm trees on the other hand won't be going anywhere. As long as you find a real building/house made of concrete, you should be fine. Use common sense don't try to stick out a real hurricane in a trailer.
I wouldn't say the eye is exactly like I have imagined, sunny day, no wind, dry ground birds flying around. Most of the wind will go away but you still have clouds and light rain.
Do a few simple things before the storm to be prepaired. Get gas for you car, even though you will not be able to drive, downed trees and telephone poles everywhere. Buy plenty food, water and medication. Find a safe place to stay during, but most importiant after the storm. Remember no power, no A/C, no open stores or restraunts, no open gas stations, no travel (trees everywhere) easy to get lost, no street signs.
The two people you will be most happy to see after the storm are the power company and the garbage man, but be patient this will take weeks or months.

It was 2 years ago and it was in Orlando. Can't remember the hurricane's name but the wind was fierce, power lines went down and without any air conditioning it made the whole experience horrible.

I was with my Grandparents during Hugo. Trees were blown down on both sides of their house, but nothing hit the house itself. It was like the house was spared on purpose. I've never experienced anything that intense.
