Have you tried defraging it or used a registry cleaner. Do you have Microsoft office on it. I put Microsoft office on mine and it came with Office Startup Assistant which started when the PC was started and it made mine run very slow.

Well there are a few ways. Not sure if the temporary files are actually slowing the machine down. Certain viral files cannot be deleted. However, go into "Control Panel" and select "Interent Options." There you will see a button that says "delete temporary files".

You can also go into your C:/ drive then to "windows" and open the temporary files folder. Highlight them all and delete them.

1)run Spybot, and Hijackthis. It sounds like your computer is full of spyware/virus. Run these in safe mode after updating Spybot first.
2) remove programs not needed in the Control Panel, Add remove programs.
3) If using IE, change the size of the temp files to 5MB. Tools, options, setttings, 5MB.
4) run MSCONFIG from a dos prompt, Startup tab, and uncheck anything that you do not need.

All files with .tmp formats can be deleted , you can search in Windows Xp search *.tmp and select all .tmp files then delete it , but someone may tell you , you can delete them from .../windows/temp/
but it`s exactly wrong, it can be doing harm for your PC

Note :
1 . Make sure that delete .tmp files , some files like this ( photo.tmp.exe ) you can`t see .exe in windows Xp ( for do this , goto My Computer -> View -> Folder option -> View and deselect Hide extension for known file types

2 . Some temp files that downloaded from Internet Explorer is in temporary internet file , you can delete them by Disk Clean Up Wizard , found in Start -> All programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Clean Up

But it may because of you RAM , if you have many programs that started from beginning of windows like Zone Alarm , you can uninstall this program or upgrade your RAM
