I put a new videocard in my computer to try to play The Sims 2, as I had no videocard before. But my computer will not recognize the videocard and I do not know how to make it do so. No one knows what the videocard is and it does not have a CD. What do I need to do?

And we do not have the money to buy a new one.

Many versions of Microsoft Windows will automatically detect and install your video card. Assuming no video issues currently exist with the video card you can determine the type of video card under display adapters in Device Manager.

Many video cards and chipsets will list the type of video card and/or memory during the POST. Try rebooting the computer and as it is first booting press the "Pause / Break" key to temporarily halt the computer's boot process and read the text on the screen. If you are unfamiliar with video card manufacturers / chipsets write down some of the company names you see and search our video card driver section for that company.

Unplug everything from the back of the computer and open the computer and look for any visual identification directly off of the video card or motherboard. Many times you can find the manufacturer name, model, serial number, and/or other unique identifications that can be used to identify the type of video card or video chipset you have.

If you are unable to locate a manufacturer or model number of the video card, however are able to locate a FCC identification number it is recommended that you perform a FCC search using that number. Additional information about FCC numbers and how to search for information about a FCC number can be found on our FCC dictionary definition page.

First you'll have to go to the video card manufacturer's web site and download the drivers for that particular video card to your computer and/or burn the drivers to a CD. Then you must get the owner's manual for that video card from the same web site to get the installation instructions for your card. Somewhere along the line you will have to disable the on board graphics to the mobo. Then the video card will be in charge of the graphics.

Most graphic cards if not all, need drivers for it to work, you need to download the correct drivers so you will need to find which card you have in your computer, you may also need to change settings in your BIOS for your computer to recognise which area of your computer your graphics card is located, these are all things that if your unsure about computers i wouldn't touch, my advice is to remove the graphics card and use the onboard graphics that you were using before.

most video cards are plug and play and don't require and cd, which basically means a driver is already installed on the computer for that video card.

you need to check online to make sure that the video card you bought is compatible with your computer.
