The wire frame makes it appear to be fluttering. A flag hanging straight down does not look very impressive.

Quoting from the first site listed below:

On July 20, 1969, two Apollo 11 astronauts planted an American flag on the surface of the moon. The flag was a standard 3-foot-by-5-foot nylon flag that was altered by sewing a hem along the top. A telescoping crossbar, hinged to the flagpole, was extended through this hem so that when the flag was planted on the Moon, it would stand out instead of hanging limp against the flagpole (as it would normally do, since there is no wind on the Moon). When the flag was planted, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin had a little trouble getting the telescoping crossbar to extend to its full length, and so it ended up being a little shorter than it should have been. As a result, the flag was bunched up slightly and looked like it was actually "waving in the breeze."

The flag "waving in the breeze" on the Moon is just one example of the sort of evidence that some people have used to cast doubt over whether NASA actually sent men to the Moon. More information about this subject, as well as more detailed explanations of all the evidence showing that NASA astronauts did in fact land on the Moon, can be found at The Great Moon Hoax, BadAstronomy.com, and The Moon Hoax.

Just remember -- if Faux News says it, it's probably wrong.

Yes we did land on the moon, 5 times. The flag was not fluttering in the wind, it was held in an open position with a wire frame. Light and shadow may have made it appear to waver slightly as they walked with the camera.

By the way, the conspiracy theorists would have you believe that the whole thing was filmed in a studio. There is no wind in a studio either.

Well the conspiracy goes that we did land on the moon but that the russians did it first. Apparently the video was mocked up in a studio in the US. Is it real? Who knows. I believe that we were the first to land there and that the video is genuine. The fluttering flag, the shadows can all be explained.

Are you seriously raising this question?

Oh course we landed on the moon. First the flag only appears to be "fluttering in the wind." They made the flag to "appear" this way on purpose. They gave it this shape then whatever material it is made out of is stiff. So I know you have never scene it actually "fluttering."

Yes we reallly landed on the moon.

As for the "flag" non-issue, it simply shows how dumb conspiracy theorists are. If they'd bothered to look it up, they'd know the flag(s) are held out from the flagpoles by a stiff wire--just like a sign hanging from a lateral pole sticking out from a building. NASA did that--and explained it at the time--so the flag wouldn't just droop, it would be displayed so people watching on TV--and presumably later travellers to the moon--could see it.

There were metal rods inserted in the flag all the way around - its just looks like its fluttering. Can you say optical illusion? And yes, we've been there several times. What a shame that we haven't gone back, we could have learned so much.

see www.clavius.org

for all the debunking of the moon hoax silly billies...

zzzz...that's all old hat. Of course the US landed men on the moon. Do you think they could fake it and fool the the Russians and the rest of the world 6 times!??! (7 times if you include the abandoned Apollo 13 mission).

And of course there is air on the moon - there is air everywhere. The air on the moon just doesn't have any oxygen in it. And because the moon's gravity is only one-sixth that of earth, it cannot hold down an atmosphere. But air is everywhere - it's called space! :)

Yeh NASA has there reasons to prove these things wrong. They needed the original film to prove people wrong but where stupid enough to loose it and have been looking for it.
They say the flag fluttered because there is little gravity so it took a while for the gravity to pull the flag down, so it moved a bit.
Some say it was a fake because there where no stars but NASA says this is because the moon reflects so much light from the sun so when your on the moon its too bright to be able to see the stars.

Although I would like to prove the Americans as fakes.lol so sorry to disapoint

It wasn't fluttering.
"The Science: If you look closely, you will notice the flag's edges are pulled taut. This effect, which was done purposely as to not allow the flag to just hang flat, it was created by inserting a stiff wire into the fabric. The "flutter" was created as the astronauts worked to erect the flag. As the wire was adjusted, "Old Glory" appeared to wave."
