Blown clutch mate, sounds like the clutch thrust bearing has collapsed and taken the rest of the clutch with it.

Been in motor trade 30 odd years and never heard of a Thruster Bearing, till I suppose one learns something new every decade, it is certainly serious enough to stop driving it right now, something has broken, If it is a broken Thrust ( no "er") bearing that will almost certainly mean a new ENGINE, Thrust bearings stop the Crankshaft moving when the Clutch release bearing pushes against the pressure plate, It could be the release bearing has failed or the presure plate diaphragm fingers, but it could be omething inside the gearbox, so has it got oil in, if not it may have overheated, I have seen them blued and ground right away, when this happens you can get two gears at once, if you are lucky the gears break if not it lock the front wheels solid and you crash, or stop so quick the preson behind crashes into you, so I am afraid it is get the local garage man to recover it and take a look, If the Bottom Pulley moves in and out, it is thrust bearing so decide whether the car is worth a new engine before ypu proceed, but dont drive it till it is fixed.

Open the bonnet and look over the back of the gearbox to see the linkeage. Get someone to wiggle the lever in the car and see whats broken. The linkeage comes as a complete unit and is easiest fitted on a ramp, in fact vauxhall now supply a modified linkeage as the bushes in the original part were wearing prematurely. Its probably a job best carried out at a garage as setting up the linkeage after fitment can be tricky, about half to one hours work the lot. Should be able to temp. repair link to get you to a garage if you know someone who knows what theyre looking at.

the rpms went into the red in second gear? i am assuming this happend without any increase in speed and therefore you have attained what we refer to in the buisness as a "smoked clutch".
this may also cause glazing of the friction disc and "blueing" of the metal surfaces of the pressure plate and flywheel. all of which contribute to a inproperly funtioning clutch.
other side affects:
with the engine running, does your clutch pedal vibrate under engagement?
does the clutch pedal refuse to engage until near the end of its travel?
and of course the tell tale sign that you've smoked your clutch is ..
when it happened and the tachometer denoted redline, did you smell anything similar to an organic science experiment gone awry? very foul and very organic, something along the lines of a fat man in a leisure suit set ablaze.
cheers

could be the clutch cable as slipped, i got a freelander with a hydraulic clutch and the same happened to that - i had to replace the hydraulics - whilst the gearbox was off i also replaced the clutch -
in reference to the other answer - if a thrust bearing colapses this doesnt mean you have to replace the whole gearbox

your synchronizes are working. Better get it fix. You have metal float in the rest of your gears.

Could be the clutch plate or the slave cylinder that hydraulically disengages the clutch.
