Okay, here's a marginally harder question: how many 7 x 7 squares?
Well, there's one "in the bottom left corner" (it excludes the top row and the right-most column) one in the bottom right, one in the top left, and one ni the top right. There are 2 choices for the row to be excluded, and 2 choices for the column. So the answer is 4.
For 6 x 6 squares, there are 3 horizontal choices and 3 vertical, so that's 9 6 x 6 squares. We can go all the way to 1x1 squares where we have 8 x 8 = 64 choices.
So, in total, there are
1 + 4 + 9 + 16 + 25 + 36 + 49 + 64 = 204 squares.
