It depends on how old you are. If you are in your 80's or 90's I wouldn't wait a year. If you are 18 - 55 y/o I would say minimum 1 year. People tend to be themselves within that timeframe. Then you will know if you can be compatibile.

9 months at least with about 2 of them where you both live together, that way you will know each other enough to ask if you can live together in marriage, and to see if anyone was hiding any babies :)
