In general, masturbation is considered haram, there are better things to do when you are bored.
But it is forbidden to have sex outside of marriage and unmarried people get sexual urges too, and if masturbation will relieve that urge and prevent fornication or adultery, then it is not a sin.
A hadith recommends fasting to supress the sexual urge, but if that doesn't help, then masturbation is the way to go, it's better than commiting fornication.
A married couple may indulge in mutual masturbation as part of their sexual relations, but masturbation on your own isn't acceptable unless your spouse is unavailable, and not masturbating would lead you to adultery.
So unless you are so sexually frustrated that you are about to hop into bed with the next person who offers, masturbation isn't acceptable, but if you _really_ need to have sexual release, and you aren't married (so can't have sex) then masturbate without a guilty conscience.
