First off, you're no idiot, just inexperienced.

Second thing, there is no real way to block spam. No matter what internet service you use, no matter what operating system you use, you are probably going to get spam no matter how many programs you get to try to keep it out.

You can minimize it though.

Never give out your email address to anything that looks too good to be true. Like those free online sweepstakes webpages. They usually sell email addresses to spammers for money.
