I told her she should go see a doctor and she does have an appointment next week but in the meantime what can she do to stop the bleeding and is it very serious that there is so much blood. also why does it get worse when she eats beef? can she become enemic or what other health problems could result.

Sorry to hear about your mother's problems. It's highly unlikely that hemorrhoids will cause her to lose enough blood to cause any other problems. It's a good thing she will be seeing her doctor as both hemorrhoids and colorectal cancer can cause this type of bleeding. But please don't panic when you read this. Bleeding hemorrhoids are rarely serious, just a nuisance. She should keep the anal area clean and dry, wipe or pat carefully after a bowel movement to avoid further irritation. Increase her fiber intake, avoid straining to have a bowel movement and Sitz baths may help to soothe the irritated skin. Ice packs can help slow down and/or stop the bleeding. Don't bother with Preparation H, this is beyond what that can do to help, but Tucks pads can be soothing. As far as beef is concerned, it may have something to do with meat being more difficult for us to digest and that partially digested muscle fiber may be more dificult to void or more irritating to rectal tissue. She should avoid all red meat for now. If there's anything else I can do for you, don't hesitate to contact me.

A word about bleeding. Everyone who has advised your mother to go to an ER due to heavy bleeding does not know how much bleeding there actually is. Exactly how much in cc's is "so much"? Typically the lay-person overestimates the amount of blood loss. Unless your mother is feeling faint, lethargic, weak, and has a racing hearbeat there's no reason to rush her anywhere.

Go to the emergency room right away. If she is using a pad or something to contain the blood, bring that so they can determine the volume of the blood. A little blood can look really major, so an objective measure is helpful. (you, or they, can weigh the clean pad, then weigh the used pad and determine the volume by the difference in weights) She could be hemorrhaging from something far more serious than a hemorrhoid. If you have an urgent care office that would be okay as well. She needs to be evaluated by a professional.

Later, she probably needs a colonoscopy to see the state of her colon to see if there are polyps or anything worse.

It may be nothing significant. It could be life-threatening!

Check it out. Either way, you'll know and it will be worth it!

There's nothing she can do to stop the bleeding. She'll just have to wear a pad to catch it.

I don't know how the beef is connected to the hemorrhoids, but perhaps the doctor can enlighten her as to the causes.

Chances are she won't get anemic from this. I went through this myself with a bad hemorrhoid that bled heavily for months and I didn't. The sooner she gets her hemorrhoids removed, the sooner she'll get better.

Of course if the blood is pouring out of her every time she goes to the bathroom or not and if the pain is unbearable and this is a new problem not one she has been aware of she should go to the ER now. You didn't state how much bleeding, so it that be hard to determine. If it is just a few drops when she goes to the bathroom or a smear when she wipes herself. It could be diet related does she drink alcohol is she eating her fruits and vegetables and getting enough water? Lot's of questions but a true diagnosis can only come from a Doctor! Here's a link to research further! Good Luck to her!

You can often relieve the mild pain, swelling and inflammation of hemorrhoids with home treatments. Often these are the only treatments needed https://tr.im/JkZnp

With these treatments, hemorrhoid symptoms often go away within a week. See your doctor if you don't get relief in a week, or sooner if you have severe pain or bleeding.

Very painful indeed, and embarrassing! Warm baths help soothe the inflamation and also will give your mom some relief. There are topical creams also over the counter that will help her until she can get to the doc and tell her to uses Tucks instead of toilet tissue, also over the counter.
