Outrageous simplification. mental illness a lack of congruence between the subject's beliefs and their actual experiences. It extends all the way from mild neuroses which may be present in all of us to total psychosis. It can be the result of trauma or traumatic experiences. The brain contains about 10 billion neurones connected together in about a million billion ways (synapses). These I believe are constantly being connected and reconnected in different combinations. Excitory or inhibitory signals along the synapses control and mediate sennsory and motor behaviour in addition to controlling feedback necessary to maintain homeostasis (equilibrium). Although a vast degree of redundancy is built into this system, where new neural pathways can take over from a damaged function, things can and do go awry. I think we are getting to the stage where we can treat certain specific malfunctions, by probing and excising the deficient parts of the brain. In the old days we had to rely on crude treatments like one-size-fits-all ECT treatment, which often had damaging side effects on other areas of brain function.

Illness of mind is based on perspective. Many people who are commonly referred to as "mentally ill" merely have a different way of looking at and understanding the world than most, which causes them to behave in a manner that seems unacceptable(or unusual) to those living within the vein of more common mainstream thought. Regardless, it will always be your perspective on whether or not someone is truly mentally ill. It's based on opinions that are developed after being held in comparison with what an individual knows and/or finds themself familiar with.

I think the reason for mental illness is the same as physical illness of the body. A mental illness evolves from an ill brain. I look at it like the heart. We all have the potential to develop heart disease. It is how we take care of ourselves. If we are not cognitively nurtured then our brain becomes ill (depression, etc.) just like if we don't eat a healthy diet, our heart will become ill. But the potential for the illness lies within our genetics. Some of us are more prone to mental illness just as some of us are more prone to heart diseases.

Mental illness - outside of physical trauma to the nervous system- all deals with one thing. That is ignoring the inner light and living wrongly. Humans can heal themselves to a great degree. Epecially mental illness. This is done through intuitive knowing, patience and meditation. All mental illness is the resul of having anger and keeping tht anger within. In order to keep that ager inside and hold on to it a person must cloud his or her intuition. A person can not cloud his or her intuition and feel fulfilled and happy in life. Depression then sets in and in order to feel fulfilled that person turns to drugs, smoking, alchohol, sex, food, buying things, TV etc. in order to feel better. Then when the money runs out or the sex etc., the anger seeps back into their lives and PTSD or Bipolar or Schizophrenia results.
