a retail assistant can have a variety of tasks to acheive. One could be a cashier, based on the tills processing customers orders, one could be on a customer service desk, helping troubled customers or returning items. One could be in the warehouse or stockroom ensuring the goods are available for the customers, or you could be on the sales floor helping customers select and find the goods they require

Male and older female retail assistants take money at the till, stack shelves and may do other odd jobs such as cleaning, helping with stock takeing and creating displays of products.

Young female retail assistants spend a great deal of time talking to other young female assistants, talking out of their arses to customers about products which they have no knowledge of but should do and making embarressing mistakes at the till. They also try and often fail to look atractive, file their nails and look at themselves in the mirrors around the shop. Sometimes they will actually assist a customer.

Took that job one time and wanted to shoot myself after the first 30 minutes. They wanted me to walk the floor for 8 hours with a 30 min break in which I was not allowed to leave the store. It was horrible and boring.

They wouldnt let us ring up customers. Running the register would've made it alot more bearable. So if you can be a cashier too, that wouldnt be so bad.

Mostly ring up customers on the register, stock the shelves, and clean the store, also assist the customers with their questions and concerns.

It's basically a shop assistant so it depends which shop it's in as to what the duties would be but it would be generally shelf stacking or till work.
