Power corrupts. And as lawyers, etc. became 'career politicians', hubris set in and these people gradually became less and less indentured to the citizenry. No longer public servants, our elected officials have set themselves up as a privileged royal class in American society, without accountability or servitude to the public. The only thing that will destroy such wickedness is another American Revolution, and the dumbed-down, weak-spirited, lackadaisical citizens of the U.S.A. are in no shape to take up arms against a tyrannical, oppressive government as our Constitution allows us to do.
Benjamin Franklin once said: "When people fear government, it is tyranny; when government fears the people, it is liberty." Thomas Jefferson once said: "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." Too bad Americans are too fat, lazy, and uninvolved; like lobsters languishing in a pot of lukewarm water, we'll only start to notice when the pot begins to boil. Then it will be too late; we'll be screaming in agony over our own apathy, all because we were too damn busy driving around in $70,000 gas-guzzling SUVs; fretting over Britney Spears' crotch; getting 'low prices - everyday' at WalMart on all kinds of plastic junk we don't need; and complaining about an idiot President without ever even trying to impeach him or have him tried for high crimes against humanity. We are weaklings. China recognizes it, and will - within two generations - overtake the U.S.A. as the world's dominate superpower. -RKO-

Yes there was---but it was a VERY VERY long time ago
No one alive today would have been around to have a memory of it !!
We are back to the governing of people by the "elitists" and those who adhere to the doctrines of "devine right" and so-- once again people have opted to turn their lives over to those who would use and abuse us for personal gains !! It came about when people were too busy pursuing personal thrills and pleasures to give attentions to the matters of state and left it all in the hands of the people that they elected ---which were (and still are) the ones who can best afford the money for advertising and promotion to get the "name recognition" to get the vote ---in other words -- the richest among us----
Another point to be made here is a simple one that refers back to a comment made in George Washington's farewell address to Congress and the nation upon moving from government into private life---- he stated
Gentlemen, I would that you consider, Not electing lawyers to this body of government in the future--- for they will COMPLICATE THE LETTER OF THE LAW TO THEIR OWN ADVANTAGE !!!!
Count the number of lawyers in State and Federal Congresses today--- it will stagger you !!! And, how do you live now without the need of a lawyer at some point in your life ?? AND , our "representatives" are no longer called representatives ---they are called "law makers" ---- this ought to clue somebody into what is going on here-----AFTER OVER TWO HUNDRED YEARS -----WE DON"T HAVE ENOUGH LAWS AND REGULATIONS ???? WE HAVE TO HAVE A CONTINUAL STRING OF LAW MAKERS AND NOT ONE REPRESENTATIVE IN THE CROWD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No why would the Government ever listen to its people. If we were a Democracy as the President and other incorrectly state then they would have no choice but to listen.
But since we are a Republic and not a Democracy they only have to pretend to listen unless we force their hand through the courts or it becomes in their best intrest to listen.

I believe so. This time was in the mid to late 1700's, when we had a rural economy, and the politicians were part time anything else. It is only when they made themselves full time politicians that they became the new nobility in this country. As long as they alone control the voting process will this always remain so.

we vote them in to make executive decisions based on facts most of us do not have nor understand. If all of us had to vote everything in we would still be picking the colors for the flag! This is not American Idol and we do not get to pick this weeks winner. What you need to understand is the difference between pure democracy and a republic democracy. Lincoln was the most hated man in office and had to make decisions NO one agreed with, today he is considered one of out greatest leaders.

Probably, in the very beginning of our country it has been so long ago no one knows the answer for sure.........Even then we had ear-less politicians who were only interested in the pork and the pay off.
This gives me such a sadness to say.
