In recent years, the terminology has evolved. In education, the supervisor/ student teacher is now referred to as the "mentor/intern " relationship.

A mentor is someone who is a more-experienced advisor and supervisor who educates and guides a younger worker in terms of personal one-to-one relationship.

In your case, "I am the intern, he/she is the doctor."
If it wasn't in the medical field then he'd be your boss.
