It looks like you're using a scale of about 1 inch to 1000km for the Moon and Earth. The Moon's about 385,000 kilometers from the Earth, so the answer's 385 inches - a shade over 32 feet.

By coincidence both the sun and the moon are 29 times their own diameters away. Each covers a half of a degree of arc. If the moon is a 3-inch ball then it would have to be 87 inches away.

I assume you're talking about the Earth and Sun, respectively. If the sun were 12 inches, the earth would be .1090 inches, not 3.

I may have calculated this wrong.. converting that many kilometers to inches was.. difficult.

If the Sun was a ball 12 inches, the Earth, from my rough calculations, would need to be about 3604.717 feet away.
