Yes, a pap smear can detech if you have HPV or not because that is how I found out that I had a strain. It wasn't done separately. When you get a pap they check for any abnormalities and a couple of STD's. If you're pap comes back abnormal then that is when they may do more tests or if you take another pap within 3-6 months to find out the underlying condition. So, please make sure you get your annual paps because it is a good prevention method. Hope that helped..

A clinician will perform a Pap test at your regular gynecological exam. It's used to examine the cells of the cervix in order to detect cancerous or precancerous cells. Pap tests can detect symptoms of sexually transmitted infections. With the exception of trichomoniasis, they cannot detect the specific infection. Abnormal cell development in the cervix is usually due to an infection from certain types of human papilloma virus (HPV), but a Pap test cannot detect an infection itself. Most clinicians don't automatically test for sexually transmitted infections — you have to ask. Your clinician can help you figure out which tests are appropriate by talking to you about your sexual history.
Hope this helps

I don't believe so, I think you have to ask for the seperate test, but they are moving toward doing it in addition to the pap test.

No, it determines if you have abnormal or precancerous cells. It doesn't detect HPV.
You have to have a hpv test to screen for hpv.
