I am an unapologetic fan of Wal-Mart.

1-All of my basic needs of life (except clothing) would cost me more.
2-No job loss, though I did work at Wal-Mart briefly while in college
3-I would have to drive slightly farther, but not much as I live in a city of over 200,000.
4-Groceries, toiletries @ Albertson's or Target >I don't typically buy my clothes at Wal-Mart
5-I'm estimating it would costs about 25% more. That adds up over the course of a year
6-Louisiana

Note: I am not poor, just frugal, and saving every penny so I can retire at a good age.

1. Yes, if Wal-Mart closed its doors, it would affect everyone, whether they want to admit it or not. Wal-Mart has brought prices of household goods down dramatically, especially in rural communities, and made living expenses significantly lower.

2. No, I don't think my job is directly related to WalMart
3. No, I wouldn't have to drive any further now, since I am one of the few people in the world who doesn't have a WalMart in my area. However, I wish I did, and there is talk that I may be getting one soon. Glory!
4. I generally prefer Target, anyway, but I dont have one of those close by right now either.
5. Nah, Target prices are about as low as WalMart. They keep their prices low to compete. However, of course, if there were fewer competitors, prices would probably rise.
6. I'm in Maryland

It would affect me definitely. I wouldnt lose a job, but the wal-mart near me in NC that just opened a year ago is only about 1/2 mile from my house and the next nearest one is about 15 miles away. I live right across the street from a grocery store, but I get groceries at wal-mart because it does save a lot of money. It also saves you time driving around from store to store to look for clothing or household items, or electronics. Instead you can get a lot of things you need in one place and save gas money.

1. No

to further answer you, I do not like Walmart. I don't like the way they treat their employees (and please don't say they can quit) If everyone shops at Walmart, eventually, some manufacturing jobs in this country will go away. Walmart has thousands of employees worldwide. It is the largest employer in the US, but that doesn't make it a good place to work or shop.

It would affect everyone; as most economists have credited the "WalMart effect" in some matter or another for keeping inflation low throughout the late 1990s.

As you hopefully know, during economic booms inflation is normally an issue -- this did not occur during the last large economic expansion.

So, to answer your question, yes. It may not affect you directly, but the prices you pay for everything, interest rates, and the long-term value of your retirement savings today would definitely be affected.

It wouldn't affect me, I don't work at Walmart, I wouldn't have to drive farther for anything, and I would shop at Canadian Tire, Zellers, Future Shop, Shoppers Drug Mart, etc, same as we often do now. Yes, sometimes things cost a little more at these stores, but often not by a great deal. And Zellers, Shoppers, and Canadian Tire have a points system that makes up for it. I live in Canada, but my answers would be similar when I lived in Florida and North Carolina, except that the alternate stores would be different.

most larger communities wouldn't be impacted much because they have other options.

many smaller communities would be hard hit, though, because Wal-Mart came in an drove the local businesses out by using revenue from other areas to undercut prices until they drive the local competition away, then they can raise prices and repeat the process somewhere else.

Wal-Mart closing wouldn't affect me because I use in a lager area in California and don't work for or shop at Wal-Mart.
