In the long term, it allowed the country to put two of the most contentious issues behind it - slavery and whether the federal government or the states held supremacy within the union. With those two issues resolved (even if not to everyone's satisfaction), the union was able to focus on expansion, organizing new states, and continuing its industrialization.
