It is a story about a man who made a bet with someone that he could stay in solitary confinement(no contact with any other person) for 20 years or something like that. He would have access to anything he wanted as far as material objects, and then on the last day of the bet he walked out because he didn't want the money.

Does anyone know the name of this story and who wrote it?

"The Bet" by Anton Chekov. Also, the man who staged the bet was a banker, and the man who accepted the bet was a lawyer. An important detail you missed is the fact that the bet costs 2 million rubles, which the banker, when he loses his money, has great difficulty in earning.
