history is a good subject to read. The method used to research history is similar to that of in depth journalism.

Obviously, you'd want to take as many courses as you can in Journalism - everything from techniques to courses which give you some sort of writing experience, and this might include working on your college newspaper. Another good course you might want to include would be one in Mass Communication Law if its offered. You might also consider taking one in the Ethics of Journalism. The latter two because you don't want to become one of those people who are accused of plagiarism or of accepting favors in exchange for a favorable story. Actually, a course in Public Relations wouldn't hurt all that much either. A good journalist would want to know the difference between a legitimate story and a well-done pr campaign.
One thing to remember - most people coming out of college aren't going to get the plum assignments so don't plan on being the next Bob Woodward right away. You'll probably end up writing obituaries which seems to be where most people start.
