I have always thought Rummy and Gin Rummy were the same game. Gin is played without ever laying out melds until the end when you declare Gin. Canasta is played with a double deck and has special rules regarding when you can pick up the deck based on the number of points in your meld. It also has special rules regarding red and black threes. It is a more complex game. While they all have similarities, only Rummy and Gin Rummy are the exact same game.

Rummy and gin are the same with a few differences. In gin you hold the cards in your hand untill you have all the sets you can lay down without any left in your hand. In rummy you play of the other players, and in gin you play of the cards in your hand.

Canasta is a card game that includes 2 decks. This is the only thing i know about canasta. Never played but my parents did.

When i play with different people the rules are always to the house it seems. Only discard then , and no kills, etc, etc etc. I hope this helps.

Rummy, Gin and Gin rummy are all just different versions of the same game , I believe. But canasta is different, altho basics are the same, mostly, (there is no runs in canasta, all cards laid count against you, unless you cover with a canasta( 7 of the same card)), there is a different goal and a harder game to play. Canasta is a fun & challeging game, and Yes!, it was taught to me by my Grandma! If you have never played I would tell you to give it a try, its worth learning.

There are probably hundreds of rummy games with all kinds of names including many variations of gin rummy. I know of some variations that are callled different things by different people. Canasta is one type of rummy game and I'd venture a guess that there are many variations of that also.
