The country Iraq has a whole lot to offer, especialy historical things. Don't know how much was destroyed and what is still existing. Right now I really do not think it's a good time to go. To much violence going on. But - that's left up to you.
There are no direct flights USA - Baghdad. Iraqi Airways and Royal Jordanien are the only passenger airlines with regulary scheduled flights to Baghdad. Iraqi Airways launched a twice-weekly service to Cairo in October 2006
Charter Airlines, incl. Atrosh Air and Air Kurdistan offer occasional flights to Stockholm/Sweden and Frankfurt/Germany. In the northern city of Sulaimaniyah, Zozik Air has operated a weekly flight to Munich since mid-2006

Now is a great time to visit, the leaves are changing, spring is in the air, and Saddam is dead (yeah). The cheapest way to go would be volunteer in the army, and within a couple of months youll be sent out, for free. Have fun.
Or you could do the boring thing and just fly but i guess the cheapest boring way to go would be buy a camel then begin your journey. (Most Camels are great swimmers so you should have nothing to worry about)

You could join the army and they will even pay you to go there.
Remember though,most of the lads dont want to be there but have no choice. I should know,my son recently served 6 months there.
