I love love love James Micheners books. But alas I need to lay those books down and discover other historcial fiction authors. Please help me find new authors that mix historical information throughout their fictional accounts as Michener did.

I too loved Michener my whole life. If you love his works, let me recomend these fine writers (in no particular order):

John Jakes (Kent Family Saga, etc -- a personal favorite)
http://www.johnjakes.com/

James Cavell (Shogun, King Rat,etc)

Bernard Cornwell (The Sharpe series, the Warlord Chronicles).

James Reasoner (The Civil War Series -- awesome!!)

I think these will keep you in historical reading heaven for many moons to come. I've read everything I'm recommending to you, so you can be confident it comes from someone who appreciates Michener, and people like him, as much as you. Cheers, and happy reading.

Try Rutherford, first name Edward or Edmund - among his books are sarum (about salisbury, England), London, Moscow, another about the great forest of Britain (sorry, I can't think of the name) and he has done two or three about the Princes of Ireland.

Like Michener, he takes a place, starts in early history and follows families and events up to the present day.

Wonderful story teller. If you like Michener, trust me - you will say thank you.

I'm currently reading an excellent book called Aztec Blood by Gary Jennings which is historical and I highly recommend. Also Philippa Gregory is good if you enjoy British historicals.

Bernard Cornewll is great. I have read several books from several different series. He writes in all kinds of periods: U.S. Civil War, Early Enlish (1080 AD or so) 1800's Europe. Mostly war period books, with a little bit graphic depictions of battle scenes, but the character development is great.

Edward Rutherfurd, of course, comes to mind. I actually prefer him to Michener. I also love Eugenia Price.

Interestingly enough, Louis L'Amour writes some very good historical fiction novels, one that comes to mind is "The Walking Drum."

Even his Sackett novels are set in an historical background.
