Someone who understands the product and its potential and is willing to honestly help the customer assess current and future needs rather than rack up sales that do not benefit he customer.
A good sales rep sees himself as a customer resource and provides continuous after sale follow up. A good sales rep trains the customer to use the equipment correctly , to care for it in order to minimize repair costs.
A good sales rep understands the competitive climate of the customer's business and revenue generation process for that customer.
A sales rep is positive, friendly, professional and prompt. The great sales reps I have worked with leave their first AM contact by 8 am. (medical products) . They are no slackers showing up at first appt. at 10 am.
A good sales rep has great organization of contacts, sales leads and customer history. They keep on top of service and buying contract expiration dates. A good sales rep works well with inside sales people (me) and product mgrs.

What makes a good sales rep is probably a more simple answer than most would think. First know your product the more you know the better prepared you are to move that product. Second, Confidence. Nothing will scare of a potential sale more than a client or customer noticing that you aren't sure of your self. and the third item you'd want to focus on is public speaking. believe it or not but if you can get up in front of a crowd and speak confidently and passionately you will never have a problem in any one on one situation. This manor of speaking will always help you to lead the conversation. Plus pay attention that sales are emotional to customers. they are parting with hard earned money in their pocket. so appealing to the emotional side can never hurt.

Depending on what you're selling, I would say, get educated on what your product/service is right away. One of the things any potential buyer will respect in a salesperson is knowledge.
Another is personal experience. If you are able to buy said product/service for your own use and can testament to how good it is (truthfully), that is also a plus.
To complete this trifecta, an upbeat, helpful personality is major key. Don't be cheesy, don't be pushy - but definitely be enthusiastic, cheerful, and helpful - even if you don't make the sale.

to be a good sales assistant you need to learn to take a lot of crap and be able to talk people into things. Don't be too pushy because people hate that. Last but not least if some-one keeps getting you to do loads of stuff - do it with a smile and pretend it doesn't bother you, good luck x.

Being able to sell sand to the arabs, ice cream to the eskimo's & ringing me just as I was easing into the bath. If you can do all three, then you are a true & certified sales rep!

Perseverance, never take no for an answer, for the sale doesn't start until the customer says no.
Follow-up, follow-up, follow-up.....
I forgot about the Ford Cortina.

Someone who is punctual, well organised, able to speak out of their ****. In my experience of reps only the latter applies!
