This is the riddle that the Mad Hatter asked Alice at the tea party in "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland", and then confessed to having no idea as to what the answer was.

Lewis Carroll's own answer:
" 'Because it can produce a few notes, though they are *very* flat, and it is nevar [sic] put with the wrong end in front.' This, however, is merely an afterthought: the Riddle, as originally invented, had no answer at all"

Because Poe wrote on Both!

Most experts agree that is the official answer to the riddle as Lewis Caroll posed it - Edgar Allen Poe wrote the famous poem about a Raven, and in Victorian times would have used a writing desk to do it!

The riddle, as originally invented had no answer.

In a later edition of “Alice in Wonderland” he did give one however :
" Because they can both produce a few notes although they are very flat and are nevar put in the wrong way first"

Never spelt as Raven backwards...

"Because there's a b in both and a n in neither" is my favourite answer to the question though. =)

They are both given to flights of fancy (meaning you get your inspiration at a writing desk).

I always thought it was because they both contain quills, or they did at one time, before the modern pen was in popular use!

The question is never answered in the book.
