The classic respose to this question will always be "Final Fantasy 7, of course!" This was the first FF to be HUGE in the US and it is regarded as one of if not the best FF ever because of its story and revolutionary game play design. The only problem is that since it such a milestone in video game history, it is treasured by gamers and therefore almost impossible to find used anywhere since gamers hold onto their copies. But, ultimately, your question is a question of value. Eventually, you will have to play FF7, just because its so legendary in the gaming world. Don't start with FF8. FF8 is my personal favorite, but it doesn't give a good first impression about what FF is tradionaly about. FF is rooted in a sword and sorcery atmosphere, but both 7 and 8 were decidely more sci-fi. FF8 is the most sci-fi of the entire series, with a possible exception being FF10. A beginner to FF should start with the traditional FF atmosphere. FF9 would actually be a great way to start because it "gets back to the roots" of FF.

I hope FF means Final Fantasy cause here you go! : )
Since they are all excellent in their own ways, it is definitely a personal choice. Here are some ideas to get you started.
1: Final Fantasy VII (7) - PS1: This is known as a major turning point in the evolution of the FF games as it was not only pre-rendered 3D, it also contained more than 40 minutes of full motion video. In addition to an engaging and sweeping storyline, excellent character development and RPG gameplay, this is arguably the most popular FF game period. My introduction to FF was on 8 and after beating 10 I went back and played 7. Even though it was dated it was an excellent game that I still hold dear.

2: Final Fantasy X (10) - PS2: Here is a slightly newer title. The first FF released for the PS2, it featured fully 3d areas, beautiful full motion sequences and voice-overs - a FF first. In most gaming magazines, this game achieved an average 9/10 score. It was also the first FF game to ever spawn a direct sequel, in the Charlie’s Angels-esque FFX-2. I thought this was the most beautiful FF game to date and I became totally immersed in the storyline.

2: Final Fantasy XII (11) - PS2/PC: This is another major turning point for the FF series as this is the first and only MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) related to the title. This game, like WOW (World of Warcraft) can be viewed as a never-ending, multi-storyline, online gaming version of a highly addictive drug. I broke my habit about a year ago thank God. However, if you like interaction with others, changing gameplay, multiple gaming focuses and a monthly fee, this game may be for you!

4: The most current FF game is XII (12) which I am playing now. It is also a great game, though I personally don't find it as engaging as 7 or 10. There are also the original FF games released for the Nintendo system as well as 8 and 9 which were on the PS1. There are even FF games for the Nintendo DS and PSP and FF related-games like Final Fantasy Tactics. Everyone has their own opinion on which one is the best. However, as a group the FF games are excellent, no matter were you begin! You can also find alot of overview information on the web or at Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org
Good Luck and Happy Gaming!
