Definition - juggling is having more objects in the air than you have hands. With one hand, you can juggle two or more objects. With two hands, three or more and so forth.

Definition - clapping is the sound of two hands coming together. One hand - whatever it does - is not clapping.

Therefore - the sound of one hand clapping is nothing. Not even silence - nothing, because it cannot exist.

Go in peace, and next time, bring a more challenging question to test the Master.

There is no sound to one hand clapping. It defies the definition of a clap. It takes two hands to clap. Without that there is no clap, hence no sound.

A person who only has one hand and feels the desire to clap in acknowledgment of something that they have heard. They will take that one hand and ' clap ' it against something . . . thus the sound of one hand clapping. And that sound ? . . . Happiness, joy, intrigue, pride . . .

It's a Zen question. It's designed to take the thinking of the subject away from dualistic thought where everything has a yes/no answer. The answer is taken to be 'mu' something akin to neither...which means that cows have a zen/bhudda nature.
Seriously though zen philosophy is useful in quantum mechanics as in wave/particle duality or in the 'eight fold way' formulation proposed by Murray Gell Mann to require the need for the quark

Whooosh!!

No seriously. Ok, could the philosophy be, if something exists but we don't know it exists, does it even? Exist? At all.

And if this is true, just think what kind of a life you could have believing this.

People's unkindness, or cruelty to you wouldn't exist for you if you do not acknowledge it.

As long as every other negative thing in the world.

Then it would still exist on one level of reality, just not on you're own plane, or philosophy.

And so "you" would not be affected at all. But now we are talking the metaphysical, non-physical You!
What is real, the reality or the illusion? Then which is which?

But you are not supposed to know this, in a Zen koan you must do the work of action for yourself!
