Pear trees need another pear tree for cross pollination. We have a pear tree in our yard as well. Sometimes we get a small crop because the frost killed the buds. Sometimes it just has an off year but that's not very often. This year the tree was loaded. We have never had a problem with birds or squirrels eating the fruit buds. It may be possible that another person in your area had a pear tree that they cut down, or that it had died. If you want the pears, you may want to plant another tree. If you are limited on space there are a lot of dwarf variety's available. Good Luck!!! :)

It does sound like the buds may be killed by frost. Even with an excessive about of buds you should see fruit, it would just be small. You should try covering the tree to protect it from the frost and then do some pruning to ensure larger fruits. You can probably find something helpful at Gurneys.com

Are they getting frosted off in the spring? I would buy one of the nets to cover the tree to keep it safe from frost and pests.
