Algebra Help
Hey everyone! I have a hw question in algebra.
1. A comany makes backpacks. How many backpacks must the company sell to make a profit of more than $250?

Profit:
nylon pack=$3
canvas pack=$10

*My math text book says "10 nylon packs and 22 canvas packs" is not a solution. Why isn't a solution because that's the answer I got?

Thanks.

There are many possible combinations.
25 & 1 nylon canvas
22 canvas & 11 nylon
19 canvas & 21 nylon

etc. The problem statement says MORE THAN $250. 22 canvas & 10 Nylom gives a profit of
10*22+3*10=220+30=$250 equal to, not greater than. Sometimes you have to read the fine print.

Pick apart the question. This is not so much a math question as it is understanding what the question is asking.

1) Profit has to be MORE than $250. Re-read the question. 10 nylon and 22 canvas gets you $250 profit. That's fine, but you want MORE.
2) There are no limits on backpacks. Why make a nylon when you can make a canvas? What the question is implying is that you want the least number of backpacks made as possible (unless they give you additional information). Unless the question states that somehow there is not enough canvas to make 25 backpacks, or that you have to make a certain number of nylon backpacks, there's no reason to touch nylon at all.

Taking these two points into account, the answer is 26. At the VERY LEAST, the company must produce at least 26 backpacks to make MORE than $250, and that is assuming that 25 of them are all canvas.

It seems like a badly written question, honestly... unless that was the teacher's intent.

10 nylon and 22 canvas is not a solution because the company needs to make a profit of MORE than $250. Your solution makes them a profit of exactly $250.
One more backpack of either type will put the company in the >$250 range.

the reason why 10 nylon and 22 canvas isn't an answer is because that equals 250. your profit has to be more than 250.
