I would do a 50% water change and do it again a week later. I would also add some stresszyme to add some benifical bacteria. As far as the algae problem move your tank if it is next to a window. Also keep your lights off for a few day and then only leave them on for 8 hrs. This should get rid of your algae and your smell.

Don't use no more algae or clear water, or any chemicals for that matter, those have always been known to cause more harm than good.

As for the smell, what/how many fish do you have in the tank? And how often do you change water?

The best way to remove smells from the water is to change the water.

If the gravel in your tank is too small grained it will create anaerobic spaces(areas that don't get enough oxygen). These areas support bacteria that produce sulfide gasses,(smells like rotten eggs). Siphoning the gravel will stop this,so will Malaysian Trumpet Snails. These guys burrow in the sand or gravel and reproduce like rabbits, but the siphoning works better and faster. Adding chemicals to a tank is usually a bad idea, before adding any thing ask someone who doesn't have anything to sell. Good luck. PeeTee

May I just add- when I was using the HIKIRI- Pellets in my fish tank, it would make my water smell bad too- needless to say I no longer use this fish food (pellets- for Betta's) is what it was., but I used it for my orandas when I ran out of flakes., it was then I realized that the smell was the pellets.

Your problem may be that you are overfeeding your fish. take out any gravel, and either clean it really well, and bleach it then rinse it, and let it sit overnight, or buy new gravel. Only feed your fish twice a day, and scoop any food uneaten after a few minutes. its actually better to underfeed them than to overfeed them. change the filter at least once a month as well, and rinse it iwhen grunge starts to build up
