I heard many years ago, that with technology available, science could help people live to be 200 years or so, although the quality of life wouldn't be the greatest. Would you want to live that long if you were able to? Would you ever voluntarily help science by freezing your body for 100 years?

I think to be immortal, you would have to be unable to be killed. I don't think that this is possible, as even with the best medical technology, there will still be accidents and other human violence.

I don't think that I would want to live for 200 years, but I might change my mind once I hit the 90 year mark.

Good question!!! Frankly, becasue of the make up of the body, I do not see immortality unless it is by divine intervention. Sad to say, we are born to die. You can try to escape the inevitable grim reaper, but alas it wont do any good. Our bodies have an invisible self-destruct mechanism which is genetic and put there by birth. Even if you do escape car wrecks, injury, bullets, bad food, toxins, or whatever, the cells in our bodies can only last for so long before they die and cannot sustain their groth anylonger. Also, let says your organs do hold out for a long time. You still wont escape death, as Cancer is the body's way of detroying itself when it is no longer capable of sustaining itself. This is the body's self destruct mechanism. Live long enough, and you will develop cancer somewhere. And with a badly worn out immune system due to extreme age, death is inevitable.
I personally would not freeze my body as we do not know the effect of freezing on the body or the brain just yet. And even if it does work, I dont think I would want a second go around in life. I've seen what it has to offer, and I prefer immortality in Heaven!

It is impossible for a human to be immortal! Even if humans evolved to have an incredibly long life span dieseases would also have evolved and therfore be more efficient at killing people. There is also the fact that seens as humans need oxygen to survive and it is that that eventually kills us by corroding our lungs it seems very unlikely. I would hate to be immortal.. people witness enough pain and suffering in a normal life span let alone eternity!

oddly enough technology has actually reduced the length of time we live. if our food wasn't polluted with chemicals we wouldn't get cancers like our great granparents never got cancers. technology has decreased infant mortality (which is now skyrocketing in the united states again due to poor health care) which tweeks the mortality figures. many people think there was a green house effect in place a long time ago and people lived a lot longer then. so global warming could be a good thing.

For some really morbid fun they don't freeze whole bodys -- they just keep your head on ice.

Well, there is some research in that area. Aging appears to be incidental to evolution, not caused by it, and as such, we might be able to fight it. Aubrey De Grey has been doing a good deal of research on the topic. While controversial, he believes that it may be possible to postpone and eventually eliminate aging through treatments. Feel free to check out his theory on my sources.

As for being immune to bullets like a vampire, probably not going to happen.

Immortality defies the laws of thermodynamics. Also, I might volunteer to be frozen for science, but I don't think I'd ever want to do that just for myself.

immortal means unkillable. I could get an axe and kill the oldest thing on this planet. You would be as easily dispatched, so no immortality for you!
