Probably not, The otor would not run w/o timing belt. Sounds more like trani. If the motor starts and runs at all it is not the timing belt.

If the timing belt broke, you wouldn't need to shut off the engine as it would stop operating if the belt broke. You neglect to state what kind of car you have. My guess without knowing more is that you have a transmission problem or maybe broke a U-joint.

Its good You shut it down. Now pull the coil wire so it cant start.,get out the trusty old book and do what it says to bring #1 up to top dead center now look and see where Your rotor should be pointing. If its not pointing to the right tower point in Your dist. cap then Ya got trouble. On the good side ! Anew belt and Your good to go. Bad side! bent valves, holes in pistons etc. But My guess is cause Ya shuter down quick is a belt. If You dont understand what I said above take it to a shop. Call around, better ask around find one You know wont rip You off, lotta good people out there. Clyde T

If your timing belt broke, your engine would have shut itself off because you would no longer be getting a spark from you distributor. you might want to look at the transmission if it happened while you were shifting.

Timing belts generally don't make noise when they break. Since you gave no other information, I can't venture a guess.
