Whenever I try to make wide or sharp turns (such as parking in a parking lot and making a sharp right turn), the steering wheel feels like it locks up. It's a hazard because I almost hit another car while turning into a McDonalds driveway.

I have a 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass, automatic, two-wheel drive.

Is the stiffness in the steering accompanied by a whining or squealing sound? If so, definitely a power steering problem.

If not it could be a frozen part in your steering system. Have a mechanic check it out.

It sounds like either your power steering is going out or that your out of fluid. That just happened to me recently and I was out of fluid. We took it in to a shop and they filled it up for me. Hope this helps.

Bring it into the shop Monday morning, and I'll take a look. If I'm too far away, feel free to find someone closer.

As you said, it's a hazard. Get it fixed.
