My biggest challenge in shcool is staying awake. I mean it. Even if I am well rested. I've tried caffinated drinks but they don't help. The lecture starts and I feel my attention fogging and my eyes crossing..... and.....It's worse if the lights are off for a presentation. Anyone out there have ideas that have worked for them?

Sorry to hear about that, it must be frustrating. Just try to stay actively engaged in the discussion, take notes, etc. Perhaps you're bored with your class selection? Also, I've heard of certain foods making people tired. Eat something with a lot of protein and very little carbs for breakfast. Also, don't dress too warmly as that can make you sleepy too. Good luck and I hope you find something that works for you!

(P.S. You might get more responses if you post this in one of the health categories ... just a suggestion.) :)

This happened to me in my Art History class. The lights went out, my teacher started talking, and I fell asleep. The way I stayed up was playing a game with myself. The professor had a tendency to say "um" a lot, so in addition to taking notes I kept a running tally of how often she said the word. This small amount of fun kept me mostly conscious.

Another method that I employed in my early morning Calculus class was putting one iPod earbud in when I felt my attention waning and turning on a rock song or too. I was still able to take notes, and this woke me up relatively well.

Purely practical advice would be to make yourself as cold as possible. Don't wear a sweater; a t-shirt works much better. It's harder to fall asleep when you're cold. Sitting towards the front can help psychologically, since you won't want to fall asleep with the professor watching. Finally, physically bring a cup of coffee into the lecture hall with you and keep it in your hand at all times. Spilling hot coffee all over yourself is not very fun, and having the coffee there seems to create what's almost a Pavlovian response mechanism: you kind of signal to yourself that you need to be awake.

Different people have different sleep patterns. Some people can just sleep at night and are fine during the day - others need naps.

If you can find a quiet spot between classes (maybe an empty classroom or a bench on campus if the weather's good) where you can catch a 10 - 20 minute nap between classes, that will probably restore your body's sleep needs.

I'vee seen pwoplw do this before. Put a rubber band on your wrist. When you feel yourself start to pass out snap the rubber band against your wrist. Also, if you have a laptop bring it to class and play solitare while you pay attention to class. It helps to be constantly doing something.
