Long story short, it was a bonfire night, I parked where I wasn't supposed to after 10pm. The police wrote me a ticket, and of course he put in all the info, except for the VIN #. As I look closely, all the info seems to match, (the state, registration month & year, type of car, date, body style, etc.), BUT he didnt write the right license plate number!

Let's say if my license number is 7NiA895 but he put in 7NTA895. So he basically miswrote the "i" with a "t". And he didnt write down my VIN #! I dont even know what he was thinking while writing that down...can u say, a careless cop? So does that mean, I dont have to pay and can get away with it? I mean it's not my fault for the cop being careless right? I think God smiled upon me this time =] Let me know guys!

Call the court and ask if there are any open violations under your correct tag number. You need to give them 10 days after the ticket was written to get it into the system. If they say no, don't just forget about it. You need to document who told you this, and when. There should be a court date on the ticket. Call the court 3-4 days BEFORE the court date, and ask AGAIN!!! Document again, also. You should be OK. However, I would likely just pay the fine if I did park there after 10. You deserve the ticket.

As long as you are positive that it is written legibly, and it's wrong. I would say, no. They can't look you up by the info they have (well, they can... but I seriously doubt they're gonna go thru that trouble for a parking ticket).

Hmmmm...did he at least sign the ticket? I'd say when they run the plate against the database someone else will be getting a reminder and paying for that cop's mistake! Uh oh!

I don't know how it is in your state but in my state you have to mail in the ticket either with the money for the fine or request a court date to either fight the ticket or explain the cercumstances. The judge can reduce the fine.

Check with a lawyer first. No sense getting yourself into more trouble. You just might have a loophole that will let you get out of it, But ask a lawyer first!

It happened to me. I didn't pay; they couldn't track me down. They have to prove the offence beyond reasonable doubt - they can't do that. More fool them, and no real loss to them, either.

If you don't pay it, you had better hope that the officer didn't write a CAPITAL "I", and the bottom bar just didn't come through to your copy (which would make it look like a "T")...
