I'm looking around for an exotic and unusual pet that not most 12 year olds own. I have a 15 year old cat, and she's not very fun, so I was thinking of getting an easy pet for myself. However, I don't really want a regualr old fish, or turtle, or hermit crab. I can't get a rodent because my mom won't allow it, and I'm afraid of snakes. Does anyone know of maybe a lizard or frog that's not super expensive, fun to own, and fairly easy to care for? All help is appreciated!
P.S. Obviously I didn't mention dogs or cats. Out of the question! Stick to small and easy please!

My Pet Rock is very easy to care for. He is clean, cheap to feed, needs little water, and has obeyed his command to "Sit" and "Stay" for years at a time!

If you do your research, you can find wonderful fish to take care of. If you have a good hefty budget, you can easily get a 50-100g aquarium and modify it to take care of corals and all sorts of interesting fish. Just lookup "Saltwater fish" and "saltwater fish care". If you don't want saltwater you can get a 60g aquarium and get an Oscar. They're freshwater, get big, smart, and very fun to watch. They're not too friendly with other fish but they're fun to feed (you can hand feed with time) Getting started is the hard part, but remember fish need to be taken care of just like any pet. If fish sound too complicated you could dedicate time and money towards a Sugar Baby...
Before leaving a pet store with full hands and empty wallet do your research. Find a cool lizard? Find out how big of a house he needs. If you want something easy to care for, Anole lizards are cute and easy to take care of, as well as small.

I would try an iguana. Frogs and newts cant be handled.. what fun is that? If you handle an iguana often, it will become tame and will sit on your head or shoulder while you walk around or go to petco! It eats mainly vegitables and some fruits, so you dont have to kill smaller animals just to feed it. They are about $20 at the petshop and are easy to care for. In fact, they are pretty much the hardiest lizard alive. Have fun with whatever you choose.

Whites tree frogs. EASY to take care of, the frog will cost you about $40 (very cheap) though the terrarium is more. VERY easy to handle and either you nor the frog pose a threat to each other through touch.
Super cute and sometime males will sing.
If you want to research them, they are also called Smiling Frogs, Dumpy Frogs and sometimes Austrailian tree frogs.

Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches
Pros: I consider these the ultimate in low maintenance pets, which makes them somewhat ideal for kids (if kids get bored with them, there is not a whole lot of work to take over!). They are large enough to be handled and are generally quite docile, yet are completely undemanding of attention. Cons: they are cockroaches, so definitely not cute and cuddly! Not interactive or responsive like mammals, although they are interesting in their own way.
The link below will give you more ideas if roaches aren't your thing!! :)

A parrot would be super fun! You can teach it to talk and everything! They're also very colorful! Just don't let the cat eat it! just kidding!
Hope this helped! :))
