There can be, and oftentimes there isn't at all. There's no real rulebook of how to do a BDSM scene- the great part is that you bring whatever you want to it, whether it's gentle and sensual or really rough and dirty, whether it's about pyschological pain or physical pain, etc., etc.. Some people don't care for their scenes to be 'tainted' with sex at the end; others do it only for the sex. So again, it just depends.

And remember- they don't really 'beat the sh*t out of each other'- that's quite missing the point of BDSM; I suggest you look it up and learn a little bit more about the nuances of it.

Well, first of all, your question is obviously biased against BDSM, which is unfair to those that could answer the question. BDSM does not have to be about sex, and it doesn't have to be about sadism and masochism. The subcategories of BDSM are bondage/discipline (BD), Dominance/submission (DS), and sadism/masochism (SM). Sex is not automatically a component of any of these, and pain doesn't have to be included in the first two. Even with sadism/masochism, it might not be physical pain or discomfort, but mental, like humiliation and embarassment. There is no "right" answer as to what BDSM includes, because it will be different for each practitioner. Personally, I enjoy to spank young ladies, and often attending spanking parties. These spankings don't fall under the heading of beating anyone, and are seldom sexual in scope.
