Definately check your belts - this is a smart & safe thing on any car.

However, if your Volvo has Turbo, check that. These frequently create a high-pitch sound.

(1) the weather could be stressing the parts (2) you have dirt (3) it's breaking, and there's friction. Given your car is a 1991, it would make sense that the Turbo could start to go - if it does, beware the repair costs.

Most volvos had Turbo. If you're not sure whether you have it, look for a turbo dial on your Dash. If your car seems to sit for a second and then "lurch" when you floor the gas pedal, that's the turbo working. If the high pitch is only during that time, or is much higher during that time, it's a sign the turbo is in trouble.

Here is a quick fix/check. With the car off keys out no way it can start, Take a bar of soap, trust Me now a bar of cheapo bath soap. Are Ya with Me? Keys in Your pocket! Take cheapo soap and rub all spots You can get to on the inside of the belt.keys in Your pocket right! Ok rub rub rub. Now keys out of Your pocket, start da car. If Your noise is gone I would replace the belt if not ask around and find a trustable wrench to fix it. I feel in a volvo Youll not hear the turbo whine if its going out more like rocks in a beer can shaking kind of sound. But Ive been wrong a bunch.. KEYS in YOUR pocket before soapy soapy! Clyde T

I am hesitant about the belt answers, since you would probably hear that outside the car as well. You might want to check brickboard.com for some answers.
