Free software I don't know about, but a really good program to use and not to expensive is Cubase SE. It's a full music production system. You can record, mix, edit etc., nearly anything you may want to do. I payed 100 bucks two years ago at Sam Ash. If you have 4 people in your band, spend the $25 bucks each and get something decent. It is after all YOUR band and YOUR music, value it, don't go cheap on it. Spend a little money and have something good to show for all your work! Have fun.

Do you only have access to a single channel / stereo recording device (like the recording feature on newer mp3 players)? If so, you won't be able to use any software to separate out the tracks. Sign up at homerecording.com/bbs and search for starting out with recording... that site got me up to speed rather quickly, and finding decent, inexpensive equipment for recording multi-track songs. Good luck!

You need to record the singer, & each of the instruments on to separate tracks in order to be able to set their volumes independantly. I don't know of any freeware that is available for that. But there are some rather inexpensive but powerful programs available.
