...I want to download some songs and/or programs using Kazaa or other, but I'm afraid of getting a virus on my computer.

Is it possible that once I download a song or program to do a scan on that particular song/program to be sure there is no virus before playing it?

i don't use kazaa because i got a spyware only by installing it 3 years ago. actually all fileshare programs are not very reliable, especially those based on p2p share as kazaa and limewire. and as you said you can't trust files that you download.

however you can check if file is infected. i use Symantec Client Security and whenever i'm suspicious about some file i just do a right click and choose "Scan for viruses" feature. you can also scan a separate folder, etc. i don't know if other antiviruses has this feature, but believe me, symantec is good enough. it also scans incoming email and warns if attachment is malicious.

The actual risk is the downloading. During the process of downloading, you can pick up a virus. Why? The software (Kazaa) uses ports to download the file. When the port is open, other users on the net can access your computer as the port is open to traffic. A MP3 file does not allow for viruses so you should be able to use it without worry. Be careful of streaming files as those open a door to your computer also. Be safe!

Yes you can. Just download it and save it somewhere. I have a special folder called DownJunk. Everything I download gets saved to that folder. I scan the file and then open it.

Yes, you can.
Right click on the file.
Select scan with "virus scanner"

You have to remember that virus scanners are reactive, not proactive to viruses. If the virus is new and your scanner is not up to date, it will not detect the virus.

Also remember downloading music and programs that you have not paid for is illegal.
