First of all, where in Mexico you going? It is geographically wrong to say it is hot in Mexico. It all depends upon where in Mexico you are going. Mexico City is at over 7,200 feet in Altitude. It can get down into the 30's there.
1. Always pack one umbrella per person whenever you travel. It can be a lifesaver. Remember the rain that falls in cities polluted with smog is called ACID RAIN!
If in the HOT BEACH CITIES then don't worry about the rain so much as it is usually warm to the body.
2. A small day sack or small back pack. Keep umbrella, bottled water, snacks, and other things handy. But remember keep control over you items. You never know when someone will decide to take your items.
3. As to money, again it depends upon where you are going. If you are going via Mexico City and have a layover you will get a better exchange rate than other places. But for your best bet, use your ATM card. You can withdrawal between 300 and 500 USD a day depending upon the bank and your card's limits. Do not carry a lot of cash on you. Travellers Checks are still accepted but you tend to get a lower rate for them.
DO NOT BY ANY MEANS CHANGE MONEY IN THE US. You will feel like you have been cheated. At the beach cities the exchange rates are lower so they can earn more profit. That is why it is best to use the ATM's that exist all over the country.
4. Take an Open Mind.
5. Enjoy the Trip!

An Airwick plug in nightlight/air freshener. An extension cord and some 3 prong adapters as most of their outlets are only 2 prongs and if you have something to plug in that has 3 prongs that will not work unless you convert it with a 2 prong to adapt the 3 prong appliance/item. Also, bring those individual bacteria moist wraps, they are great for washing hands after exploring when there is not running water and soap available. We take these with us everywhere now. go to the tripadvisor.com forums and you will get great destination specific info.

If you are staying in a hotel frequented by foreginers the hotel should be ok, but if you stay in a hotel frequented by mexicans, there might not be enough remotes for the TV's, so i would suggest taking that.
I lived in Mex for several years, and I used the cheaper mexican hotels, nothing wrong with them, just the damn remotes were frequently missing.

They love American money; no need to change that. Take a lot of $1 bills. They don't like to give any change back (recent personal experience). It will be hot so dress for that.
