The basic stuff you need is:
1. Certification (so you can get a tank of air).
2. A mask
3. Swim fins (SCUBA type with open heal).
4. Neoprene booties to wear inside swim fins
5. Wet Suit (70 degrees F to 50 F), Dry Suit (50 F to 30 F) or Swim Suit (tropical 70 F +) depending on the water temperature.
6. Water proof timer or dive watch.

Some locations will require you to also have:
1. Snorkel
2. Dive flag (on a float).
3. Signal device.

You can buy or rent:
1. Regulator with air pressure gage and safety second regulator.
2. Buoyancy compensation device (vest, also holds tank).
3. Air tank (also called a cylinder).
4. Weights and weight belt.
5. Depth gauge.

Nice extras to get:
1. Gloves.
2. Dive light.
3. Gear bag with rollers that will hold all you stuff.
4. Knife (I use a folding knife made of stainless steel), or scissors, for cutting stuff underwater.

Wish I knew what country you are looking for a diving site in.
You will need a wet suit, if the water is cold, a good mask, snorkel, air tank, lead that goes from the tank to your mouth, cant remember what that is called, I think it is an equalizer. That will also have a depth gage and a content gage, to let you know how much air you have in your tank. Weight belt with weights. Gloves. A good knife. Booties. Fins.
If you have not dived before make sure you have a full health check up by a diving doctor only. If you have asthma you wont be diving. Have a good day.
