You don't have to time this motor if it is the 3.1L code T as there is no distributor. All you have to do is be sure that you install the timing chain and gears in the proper place and the computer will figure it out by itself. If this is the 3.1L motor with the distributor, again be sure to install the chain and gears properly, I think it is both dots straight up on the chain means #1. Then check dist. rotor position, it should be pointing at the internal connector for the #1 cylinder. Start motor and run till warm. With timing light connected and working, unplug the brown/white wire close to the distributor to put the ignition system into backup and time the motor to what you want. The SES light will come on but that is normal. Once you have finished adjusting, turn off motor, reconnect the timing connector, and restart to see if the SES light went out. You are done, unless you feel it necessary to clear the code.
