I want a car that is fast, good on gas mileage, reliable, and fun to drive. Which one do you get more for the money.

Here's a side-by-side comparison (specs) for you:

Fast? they both are.

Fun? ditto, I'm sure. (my top tech owns a WRX, a Shelby GT500, a Mach 1, & an Explorer,...I'll ask him which is the most fun)

Fuel economy? about equal

Most for the money? Obviously Ford. (the extra $6G for the Subaru goes to the MANUFACTURERS HOMELAND)

Reliability? May I refer you to the most recent J.D. Power & assoc. study?
Ford=Above industry average
Subaru=Below industry average
The most recentl study was of 2003 vehicles that had been on the road for 3 years. This study lists 37 manufacturers in order of the least problems to the most problems .
I'll list in their order (Best to Worst)
1 Lexus
2 mercury
3 buick
4 cadillac
5 toyota
6 acura
7 honda
8 jaguar
9 bmw
10 infinity
11 lincoln
12 ford
13 oldsmobile
<<<<<<<<< 14 chrysler
15pontiac
16 subaru
17 gmc
18 mercedes-benz
19 chevrolet
20 nissan
21 mazda
22 porsche
23 hyandai
24 dodge
25 mitsubishi
26 jeep
27 volvo
28 audi
29 mini
30 isuzu
31 saturn
32 volkswagon
33 hummer

34 kia

That outa answer the reliability Question.

Stick with American Muscle!
America's economy is more dependant on American OWNED auto manufacturers than you think!

Both cars are fast and fun to drive, and the gas mileage is equal. The STI has a very slight edge over the Mustang GT in terms of braking and acceleration. Both are also somewhat less refined than higher-end sports cars and neither has a particularly high-quality feel to the interior. The STI is more practical but the Mustang is prettier.

Reliability-wise, take the JD Powers results with a grain of salt, because I've found their results are in direct contrast with those of most other surveys. Results from the Automobile Association of New Zealand, from Consumer Reports, from the UK Reliabilty Index, from Germany's Automarxx and from other surveys consistently put Subaru at or near the top of the list in reliability and Ford solidly mid-pack. You'll likely have fewer problems with the STI, but the Mustang won't necessarily be unreliable--and Subaru parts are expensive when something does go wrong.

I would take the STI simply because I'm a Subaru fan, but you can't seriously go wrong with either choice.

I'm a fan of both actually...it really depends on what you want as these are not very similar cars.

The Mustang is a 2 door sports car with a big V8 and rear wheel drive. Its forte is going fast mostly in a straight line (though it can handle pretty well).

The STI is a 4 door rally homologation with a 300 hp Turbo 4. Its forte is road racing, auto-x and of course off road rally (though it can go fast in a straight line too).

For me, I'd get the Mustang as more of a have fun, burn rubber etc. weekend/summer car. I'd get the Subaru as more of an everyday car that can handle all weather and still seat 4 people and all their gear comfortably.

If its going to be your only car than I would probably get the Subaru just because it is more everyday convenient but still offers the performance you crave.

Oh and gas mileage advantage may go the Mustang as the STI has to use Premium (92 octane) fuel (someone correct me if the Mustang uses it too).

Well if you want to be like everyone else, get the mustang.
If you want a true performance car, get the sti.
Despite what posters on here think, they average the same mpg. So if your worried about the cost of gas, dont buy either.
STI=
300hp
awd
Front and rear LSD
1/4mile=13.8sec
20mpg
Theres nothing better sounding then a turbo spooling.
4 doors (so your friends can be with you when you smoke that mustang gt)
GT=
300hp
rwd
read lsd
1/4mile=14.0sec

But if your really looking for an american performance car, wait 8 months, the word on the street, is that ford is bringing the falcon gt platform to the states.
Falcon GT=
388hp
rwd
4 doors
faster then a 2006 corvette in the 1/4 mile

But im a big 4 door fan. Theres no point in trying to fool people that your 4 seater mustang is a true sports car.

these people are comeplete morons. THe sti is faster, handles better, has a far nicer interior, drives better, has a longer and more forgiving warrenty, and is a much more reliable car. It will also be far more fun and involving to drive compared to the mustang, which drives similar to a boat with its archaic live axel setup. the STI will also net you pretty good gas milage ( i get about 26 highway on mine), and is a safer car.

edit: I would also take ethols advice with a grain of salt: Her reliabilty ratings also factor in ford TRUCKS, which are very very reliable. It also puts mercury and buick up there, which are typically very unreliable. And she/that report cant even spell volkswagEn correctly.

and also, if you read pretty much any review of any STI in the last 5 or so years, they do nothing but rave about how good they drive, how tight they feel, and how stupidly fast they are for something that can be used as a family car. They are about as fast as a porsche 911 (996 vartiety) in pretty much every category.

please get the subaru, you'll be extremely glad you did. Mustangs and all fords suck in my opinion. I own a 03 subaru wrx and im in love its so fast, im pushing over 300 lb ft of torque, and over 300 hp. i spent about 8000 in engine modification but i can beat mustangs and camaros. plus the all wheel drive system in subarus is obsolete. im not sure if you have to drive through snow in the winter, but ur mustang will get stuck and ull have to chain it up. Gas mileage is also better. an 07 sti will also handle, corner, and just over all drive better than a mustang. insurance will be cheaper on a 4 dr. subaru vs. a 2 dr coupe. Price range for the two is just something ull have to work with, but I would deffinately get the subaru... wrx sti's are off the hook, and if u ever want to upgrade anything, though u wont need to cuz those babys come pumped up, ull find theres all sorts of awesome styling, and performance upgrades for them... good luck!

Get the 05 model. Yea, it's a little faster and looks way better then the 07. I for one, is not a big fan of the 07 bumber. The grille looks horrible. The 05 looks really nice and cheaper then the 07. So go with the 05 and smoke those new 07 models

With what you described as wanting, you obviously already know the answer. The Subaru is all of those things, while the Mustang is ugly as hell, terrible on gas, and as far as reliability, it's a Ford. Need I say more?

You pay more for the STI, but it's more than worth it.

I would get the Subaru because it handles a lot better than the Mustang since its AWD.

STI all the way.

It's quicker than the Mustang GT, better gas mileage, all wheel drive, handles better, and it's jap so it's gotta be more reliable.

Only problem is that it's probably around $8k more.
