Baseballs in the earliest days were pretty much the same size as today's but softer (less tightly wrapped), covered with leather, somewhat darker, and stitched in a cross pattern (like an "X"). Bats, on the other hand, were considerably thinner and lighter (and longer) than today's.

It was the same size but stitching was different and it was less tightly wound making it softer. One ball was also used for several innings as compared with modern balls which are used for an average of 7 pitches. This made the ball accumulate dirt and other material making the surface darker, it would also become misshapen.
