sweetie: Look at all the videos for kids, the girls all wear pink or purple, especially if they're are a princess. Bikes, clothes, jewelry, etc. are all pink or purple. When I was a little girl (a long time ago) the same applied. You NEVER saw a boy in a pink or lavender shirt or pants. Boys colors are red, green, blue, black, yellow, brown and that's about it.

It is just a societal stereotype. Around the turn of the century (1900) pink was considered a boy color and blue a girl color, and now they have flipped.

I don't think he was born with that association. He has learned it from his observations. He has seen toys in stores, seen girls he has played with at daycare or other places all dressed in pink, etc. Young children are very observant and very quickly learn by watching us.

children see and hear more than you know. I think it doesn't matter how old they are they learn from their surroundings regardless. He probably has heard other people say things that society says is boy and girl stuff.
