the rhetorical purpose of short sentences is to provide the reader with insight to the speaker. the speaker may be trying to convey a fast paced idea... for instance the speaker may be thinking, and the short sentences convey the fast and incomplete thought process. Usually, short sentence structure conveys intense emotion. Short sentences are very powerful esp. in poetry
