you need to have anti-adware and anti-spyware instead of adware and spyware:) LOL.. just kidding.

what you need is a good antispyware which could deal with adware on your computer. pop-ups are usually shown by adware installed on machine. and good antispyware takes care of spyware, adware, malware and similar threats. so you need only one program to take care of all computer parasites.
i suggest you spybot search and destroy, it powerful and free. download spybot at http://www.2-spyware.com/review-spybot-search-and-destroy.html

It is adware and spyware and trojans that are likely causing those popups!

Popup blockers, such as the Yahoo and Google toolbars, will only stop web based popups. They can help somewhat but will do nothing to stop popups on a computer that is badly infected with trojan downloaders that are contacting other computers to download and deliver the pop up ads.

If you are getting excessive popups and popups even when you are using your computer off-line, your computer is probably infected.

Try a full cleaning and dis-infection routine, if you are getting excessive popups, or are getting popups even when you are offline.

This is the one I use (it will take some time).

1. Scan for virus and remove (free online scan) with BitDefender
http://www.bitdefender.com/site/home/

2. Scan for trojans, adware and spyware and remove (free online scan) with Ewido
http://www.ewido.net/en/

--------------------------------------------------
And after your computer is fully cleaned of spyware I would suggest IE-SPYAD to prevent further problems, if you are using IE browser:

"IE-SPYAD adds a long list of sites and domains associated with known advertisers, marketers, and crapware pushers to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer. Once you merge this list of sites and domains into the Registry, the web sites for these companies will not be able to use cookies, ActiveX controls, Java applets, or scripting to compromise your privacy or your PC while you surf the Net. Nor will they be able to use your browser to push unwanted pop-ups, cookies, or auto-installing programs on your PC."
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm

------------------------------------------------------
And if your popups say "Messenger Service" at the top Title Bar. Read Here:

If you are using an older version of Windows (pre XP-SP2) you may also be getting "Messenger Service" popups which are caused by Microsoft leaving the almost never used Messenger Service enabled by default. These type of popups will have the words "Messenger Service" up top in the title bar. This was corrected in Windows XP- Service Pack 2.

Understand that the Windows Messenger Service is completely different from, and not in any way related to, "MSN Messenger", "Windows Live Messenger" "yahoo Messenger", or any other well-known instant messaging system. Therefore, disabling the Windows Messenger service will have no effect upon your use of any other instant messaging applications. They will continue to work without trouble.

To disable this service in older versions of Windows use the free, Shoot The Messenger from:
http://www.grc.com/stm/ShootTheMessenger.htm

Good luck.

If they appear when you are online and not at other times then you need to enable the pop up blocker in your browser. Its in Tools - Internet options.
Also, if you use Firefox you can download the Adblocker plugin which really speeds up browsing times.
But if they appear when you're offline then you have spyware and adware on your pc. Make sure you have the right software from the genuine site, and run it in safe mode.
To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.

Then beef up your security. Its easier to prevent malware getting on to your sytem in the first place rather than trying to remove it. All the following programs are free for home use;

You need to install one firewall.
The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out.

http://www.comodogroup.com/ - Comodo firewall.

You need to install one anti virus;
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ -AVG anti virus or
http://www.avast.com - Avast Antivirus

You need all three anti spyware programs;
http://www.ewido.net - AVG(Ewido) anti trojan.
http://www.lavasoft.com - Ad-Aware SE Personal anti adware
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.
Also use Microsoft Defender and their online scans.

And these are useful utilities;
http://www.mozilla.com/ - Firefox web browser.
http://www.ccleaner.com Cr*pcleaner Registry cleaner and privacy tool
Winpatrol is a handy utility that tracks cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.

Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.

Turn on your pop up blocker. Check your security settings. They may need a little tightening up. Be aware of websites that potentially bombard you with this stuff. Don't click them flashy ones on when they enter your screen. They set up shop when you accept them. Download McAfee Siteadvisor. That can help. Its free at their website.

YEAH.. adware and spyware only help to prevent viruses.. you should enable pop up blocker in your internet explorer, go to
tool, internet options, click "privacy" tab, and on the pop up blocker click "block pop-ups, click "apply", then ok.
you are set!

Do a search on how to use a "hosts" file and map the IP addresses of the adservers to your localhost.
For example, if ad.doubleclick.net were your server that you wanted to block... you would map that to 127.0.0.1 in your hosts file.
The idea is pretty much the same thing with the "adblock" function in Firefox.
